I’m specifically talking about going to AMC. I’m not sorry, but I am an AMC A-Lister. Sue me.
So what makes going to the movies “worth it?” Is it the movie itself, or is it the cinema experience—the big popcorn, the reclining seats, the surround sound, and the Dolby screens?
I’d argue that the cinematic experience itself is exhilarating and feels like home, but treat these movies like our guests, and we (the viewers) are hosts. Would you want a ___ visitor in your home, disrupting the flow, energy, and community? No.
So I am pro-going to the movies at any opportunity possible BUT for the right featured guest, ESPECIALLY, in THIS ECONOMY!!!!
[anecdote] Let’s break this down
On Saturday, May 11th, Josh and I looked at the price of an adult ticket to see The Fall Guy at 5:15pm, and it was listed as $18.99 per person. Okay. It’s a little expensive, but it’s a Saturday night, and we’re buying these tickets 1 hour before showtime, so what do we expect? We decide it’s okay. Josh adds both tickets to the cart, and now, suddenly, the final cost to see the fall guy is $45. … “Did you accidentally add a food service?” I asked Josh.
We look at the line item break down and it actually costs $18.99 per ticket 🎟️ PLUS taxes, PLUS a service fee, it came out to $45
Do we really want to see The Fall Guy… THE FALL GUY… for $45?? MMM 🤔 not really. No.
But I haven’t had the LUXURY of getting my heart broken in a place like AMC in a while, so I’m willing to take the financial hit just to have the movie-goer experience.
We wait to buy the tickets. We decide we’ll buy them in real time IN the theater (how retro of us).
We’re late 20-something-year-old Hispanics. Of course, we’re not going to buy candy or sweet treats from the theater itself. We’re going to buy them from a corner store or supermarket and sneak them in. So we go to Shoprite and get our snacks ($3 each). This makes me wonder how much snacks, drinks, and a large popcorn would cost at AMC….in this economy.
$88. That’s how much.
Guys, I’m not even kidding you. $88.
As Josh is driving up to the parking lot, I’m giving a line like break down of how we could DIY our own movie experience, and by the end of it, Josh said
“That [DIY] would still cost less than 1 ticket.”
He puts the car in park, and I merrily walk into the theater, knowing everything I know.
Surprisingly, when we got to the theater at 5:10 p.m., the tickets totaled $40. So, we saved $5 using the old-school method. Interesting.
We enter the theater and settle in with our contraband, and 40 minutes later, The Fall Guy begins.
The Fall Guy
Until the welcome and thanks for coming to our movie credit scene rolled, I thought this movie was based on the video game The Fall Guys
it turns out it wasn’t based on a video game at all, and it was an ode to the stunt community, aka the the fall guy(s)
I LOVE that there are now scenes where the director and star of the movie sit in a director’s chair (I need a director’s chair) and personally thank us (me), the moviegoer for keeping the cinema alive.
Like… you’re welcome. But also…thank YOU for appreciating my service.
Things I Whispered to Josh during the film
- this [Ryan Gosling’s Character] is Ken. I can’t unsee him as Ken.
- She’s [Emily Blunt] in a full relationship with John; it’s hard to take this seriously 😐
If a film doesn’t do a good job at telling a story SO GOOD you forget the truth, the reality, then it’s not great storytelling and/or you didn’t cast the right actor.
For example, every movie Ryan Reynolds is in…he plays Ryan Reynolds, even in every Mint Mobile commercial… that’s Ryan Reynolds.
But Tom Hardy… Austin Butler…Joaquin Phoenix…Jennifer Lawrence… they are their characters. They are their movies.
What I Didn’t Love
What I Found Interesting
CONCLUSION
So was it worth the watch or should I have just waited to stream it on my own?

TL;DR
Could have stayed indoors and saved $30.
